Creating Your Altar
I had a book published in 2001 entitled “Spells & Rituals Using Candle Magick”. I thought it would be fun to share some information from it on how to create an altar.
You can create an altar anywhere in your home – even in a drawer or cabinet.
As we move through our sacred work together you may want to create an altar to keep you focused, increase the energy, invite your ancestors to be present, and invite certain Goddess archetypes into your life. This will help you to resonate more deeply with different aspects of the sacred feminine, and explore how she shows up in your life. It will definitely help you create a more profound experience and get the most out of our time together.
For example you may want to find an image of a particular Goddess you would like to get to know more (e.g. Sekhmet, Isis, Baba Yaga, Sheila Na Gig, Lakshmi, Demeter or Hecate) and print it out, or use an oracle card you already have, and place it on your altar. You may even want to buy a statue. You can then choose to work with her energy for a month or so. You may even want to focus on just one Goddess archetype for our whole time together. You could also use any other feminine image that speaks to you, perhaps even a woman who inspires you.
I then suggest you spend at least a few minutes each day at your altar, dropping into a quiet, meditative space. This is when you can ask for guidance or spend time reading or meditating on her. It would be lovely to have a candle on your altar you can light to indicate the beginning of your sacred time and then blow it out when you’re finished. You can also say some beautiful words as you light your candle, inviting in all the energies you want to be with you, and then giving thanks and saying goodbye when you blow it out.
Here are some photos of pages of my book that describe how to create an altar. (Please post any questions or comments in the chat section). Enjoy!
